Brixton Surveyors team conducting a detailed building inspection in South London
Our Story

Born in Brixton. Built on Trust.

Brixton Surveyors was founded with a simple belief: people buying and selling homes in South London deserve straightforward advice from surveyors who genuinely know the local market. Not a call centre operation based somewhere else. Not jargon-heavy reports that leave you more confused than when you started.

James Carter, our founder and principal surveyor, spent a decade at a large London surveying firm before setting up on his own in Brixton — the neighbourhood he'd lived in for most of his adult life. He'd grown frustrated watching clients receive generic reports that missed the specific issues common in Brixton's Victorian housing stock: the clay soil that causes seasonal movement, the original sash windows that hide condensation problems, the party walls that so frequently become contentious between neighbours carrying out renovations.

So he started over. Small team. Deep knowledge. A commitment to always explaining what a report actually means in plain English.

Today, Brixton Surveyors has a team of three qualified surveyors and has completed over 500 surveys across Brixton, Brixton Hill, Herne Hill, Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham and the wider South London area. We're proud that the vast majority of our clients come through word of mouth and repeat business.

James Carter

Founder & Principal Surveyor

James has been surveying South London properties for over 15 years. A Brixton resident himself, he founded the practice after recognising the need for a truly local, plain-speaking surveying service. He specialises in Level 3 building surveys and structural defect assessment.

Away from surveying, James is a passionate advocate for South London's architectural heritage and sits on the committee of a local conservation group.

Marcus Okafor

Senior Building Surveyor

Marcus brings specialist expertise in building pathology — the science of diagnosing what's gone wrong in a building and why. He's particularly skilled at identifying hidden defects in older properties and has a forensic eye for the kind of structural issues that less experienced surveyors miss.

He's handled some of the most complex party wall disputes we've encountered — and handled them with characteristic calm and authority.

Priya Sharma

Residential Surveyor & Valuer

Priya joined Brixton Surveyors in 2019 and quickly became the team's expert on leasehold property, valuation and lease extensions. She has a particular talent for making complex valuation and leasehold concepts accessible to clients who've never encountered them before.

Having grown up in a South London flat, Priya understands first-hand the joys and pitfalls of leasehold ownership in the capital.

What Drives Us

Our Values as Chartered Surveyors in Brixton

Three core principles that guide every survey, every report and every client conversation we have.

Transparency

We tell you what we find — the good and the bad. If a property has serious issues, you'll know about them clearly, not buried in footnotes. Our reports use plain English, not jargon, and we're always available to explain our findings.

Local Knowledge

We live and work in Brixton. We know which Victorian streets are most prone to subsidence near Brockwell Park, which properties are likely to have asbestos, and what fair repair costs look like in the SW2 postcode. That context makes our surveys better.

Personal Service

We're a small team. When you contact Brixton Surveyors, you'll deal with the same person from first contact to follow-up call. No handoffs, no outsourcing, no anonymous helpdesk. Just straightforward, personal service from local professionals.

Professional Credentials

RICS, CIOB & RPSA Accredited Surveyors

Our accreditations aren't just letters after our names — they mean we're held to strict professional standards, carry full indemnity insurance and follow regulated codes of practice.
